NAPLES — Every time six-foot,
burberry scarf three-inch Preston Truman Boyd crawls into the make-up chair for the transformation from mop-topped Minnesotan to green-skinned monster in Mel Brooks musical "Young Frankenstein," he knows he's going to be there for a while.
"It's a comfortable chair,"
moncler jackets he cracked in a recent telephone interview from Fayetteville, Arkansas, where the musical was on a pre-Christmas stop.
A re-imagining of the Frankenstein legend based on Mel Brooks' classic comedy masterpiece, "Young Frankenstein" follows young Dr. Frankenstein (that's Fronkensteen) as he attempts to complete his grandfather's masterwork and bring a corpse to life. "Young Frankenstein" opens at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall in Fort Myers for 8 shows starting Dec. 28.
Kelly Meurer,
moncler outlet the head make-up artist for the "Young Frankenstein" tour, sees Boyd like clockwork at 7:15 p.m. each night. They meet up to eight times a week - and twice on days with matinées - when the actor might get out of make-up from the afternoon show near 5 p.m. and re-start the process just after 7 p.m. She's the only one who handles his intensive make-up process - no breaks, no sick days. The last time Meurer was feeling under the weather she wore a surgical mask through the evening.
Its her job to age the young actor into the stumbling, creaking Monster, filling the latex bald cap with padding, painting the two scars across the head and neck with red and black greasepaint and adding other theatrical touches.
Each night,
moncler ski jacketsMeurer's masterpiece involves three different custom-made prosthetics, a wig, six shades of green makeup, 12 additional colors for contrast and two kinds of adhesive. A custom-made latex bald cap gets replaced every eight shows, while pieces for the forehead and the neck scar are replaced every night.
"... and then I cry when its taken off," she sighed.Boyd spends the 75-minute session listening to music, favoring old school progressive rock, like Yes, Nektar and Starcastle. After leaving the make-up chair, Boyd says he likes to look in the mirror and do a few growls to get into the monster's frame of mind.
"The makeup is
moncler mens jackets such a huge part of it ... I let out a few growls and moans and I'm ready to go," Boyd said. "I do love my growl."Boyd said he has to concentrate more on the physical, especially since the monster doesn't have that much actual dialogue and only sings a little - a positive considering the amount of padding, latex and greasepaint he's wearing on his head."I have to be very mobile to be very un-mobile," Boyd said, referencing the jerky motions of Frankenstein's monster.
Beyond his big green creation, he loves the other comedic moments in the show, particularly moments between Dr. Frankenstein and hump-backed assistant Igor."Everything about it is big," he said. "The costumes, the audience, the circumstance. The laughter. That's why people that do musical theater do it ..."
There have been mishaps.
moncler Meurer describes a scene in Costa Mesa when Boyd's top hat - part of the iconic "Puttin' on the Ritz" number - got stuck on his head. When he removed it, parts of the prosthesis went with it, which meant an emergency repair in a few moments snatched backstage.
Boyd wants audiences to laugh at his creation - much like Mel Brooks wanted audiences to laugh at his film which spoofed the horror genre."Just forget what's going on in your lives for two and half hours and have a good time," he said. "All we can do is hope that you walk away laughing."
The actor laughs off the question "Is it
moncler online easy being green?" - he says he's the one who cracks most of the jokes backstage."I'm a big goofball in life as it is - its very fitting that I'm in green every day!
